OUGD402 | Studio Brief 02 - Idea development & Sketches

After analysing myself as a person I was lacking creative ideas for my personal branding. So I decided to get stuck into some quick sketching in the hope that this would spark some ideas. I began by playing around with the ideas which I felt strongly defined me, this being flowers and my unusual name Sophie-Grace (Gracie). I had seen a lot of hand rendered type and calligraphy lately and I have been really drawn to the technique because of how you can transfer the ink into a digital image to give your work a handmade feel. So I decided to begin attempting my own calligraphic style to scan in. I hand wrote my name(s) many times in a number of calligraphic and hand type styles. Whilst doing this, I tried to find ways in which my initials could form a shape, in the negative space or otherwise. I have always loved the form of ampersands because there is so much freedom you have with the shape, so I thought I could potentially include this in my design using S&G to represent my two names.
As I sketched out ideas, I kept Pinterest and my previous research in front of me to keep the ideas flowing and give me new ideas. Below are the sheets of sketches I came up with in an afternoon :

I then took some of the most successful designs chosen by myself and others into circles to refine the designs and to imagine them as potential circular logos.
